Why is Las Cruces a great place to start a career?
The United States Census Bureau ranked Las Cruces, NM as one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in America. This expansion, a solid agricultural economy, and beautiful scenery indicate that the job outlook in Las Cruces should be good. The city’s downtown center includes a large, walk-able shopping district. The climate is favorable for outdoor activities — spring and fall seasons are warm, and winters are mild.
Las Cruces has a rich and colorful history. One of the most renowned figures of late-19th century Americana, the famous adolescent outlaw Billy the Kid lived for a time in Mesilla — a town just south of Las Cruces. He had killed a sheriff and was to be hanged for the murder. He escaped, but was shot a few years later by a Dona Ana County sheriff.
Las Cruces is also known for its collections of prehistoric fossils. 600 million years ago, the land was covered by water and filled with reptiles and amphibians. Today, many of these coveted fossils are house in the Smithsonian museum in Washington, D.C.
As a Vista College student, you might enjoy visiting ghost towns in the Las Cruces area where miners searched for silver and gold. The only federally funded memorial remembering the Bataan Death March, a forced march of roughly 100,000 American and Japanese war prisoners in 1942, was constructed in Las Cruces in 2001. People also travel to the Organ Mountains, just 10 miles from Las Cruces, to hike, camp and bike. For CCC students who are wine aficionados, Las Cruces’ wineries, the oldest in the country, are also a great stop. Las Cruces’ abundant natural beauty makes it a favorite in the filmmaking industry, as well.
As interesting as the attractions is the speculation on how Las Cruces got its name. One legend traces the name back to 1830, when some travelers from Taos were attacked by Apaches. Many of the travelers were killed, and the survivors erected crosses in memoriam. Las Cruces is Spanish for “the crosses.” Other stories attribute the name to the Spanish words cruce, meaning “crossroads.” This heritage makes “Las Cruces” a fitting title for the converging point of American, Hispanic and Indian cultures.
